“The Jewels of deNial '' is a 55+ performance troupe, performing in a “Radio Show” style theatre style. Currently an all female troupe, these ladies agree that the process of aging has its challenges, but it doesn't have to! They meet weekly (in the non-winter months) to rehearse the radio scripts and of course, brainstorm new ideas for writing their own scripts - which are based mostly on real life events. Of course, those stories have been modified with a little extra pizazz and razzle dazzle. As they say, laughter is good medicine ...and goodness, the Jewels of deNial sure do laugh a lot!
The :”Jewels of deNial” perform both on-site at Northern Starz with luncheon and dinner theatre performances ~ and will also come to YOU at your office, coffee club, luncheon, senior center, or any other venue!
ROAD TRIP – The Jewels take a vacation out west in Ruby’s van. All sorts of things go wrong. Like a motel that resembles the Bates Motel – a road side café where their intentions are misread and a side trip to the county jail. There’s everything you could imagine, from a bee attack at a lemonade stand, a bison encounter, a bank holdup, car trouble and a swift ride through all the tourist traps.
MEDICAL MISHAPS – The Jewels have had their fill of medical issues, but this latest one has Pearl in the hospital against her will. Ruby and Crystal make plans to sneak her out without being discovered. The show focuses on forms to be filled out, insurance issues, doctors and nurses being overworked and everything you can imagine going wrong – does. Once again, the Jewels find laughter to be the best medicine.
SIDE WINDOW – When you get older, you have a lot of time on your hands and the goings on in the neighborhood can often be misconstrued or exaggerated. This show introduces Pearl’s sister, Topaz, from Tennessee who is bent on getting her sister moved into an assisted living situation. All of the Jewels become involved in the view outside of Pearl’s window and laughter ensues.
TECHNICALLY CLUELESS – Technology has become the norm for most of today’s population, but when it’s all new to you, it becomes a nightmare. Passwords, artificial intelligence, voices from the phone and all the problems that the older generation encounter as they navigate cyber space, create humorous scenarios and lively entertainment. Everything from talking toilets to robots who deliver meals, drones and all sorts of technological nightmares.
JEWELS OF CHRISTMAS - This show is a holiday version of “Technically Clueless.” with the inclusion of secret santa, baking cookies from around the world with famous chefs, singing holiday carols and exchanging “special” gifts. The technical issues have a lot to do with the holidays this year as the Jewels try their hands at some of the new gadgets.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE AT 55+ MPH – The only things sure in this world are death and taxes. When you reach retirement age, you think more about both of those things. Do you keep on working to support yourself? Do you plan your funeral ahead of time? Are you involved in those situations as much as you should be? How about extending our lives to go beyond the average life expectancy? In this episode we have the Jewels attending a funeral for a friend, which spurs all kinds of conversations on the subject. Tough topics, but even the Jewels can find something to laugh about.
WHICH WITCH IS WHICH?
October brings thoughts of witches, ghosts and goblins. When you’re in your retirement years, October also is decision time for your Medicare Advantage plan, which can be even scarier. See how these two topics come together with the Jewels of denial’s next episode of “Which Witch is Witch”.
Come be part of this fun troupe!
We are excited to try something new and collaborate with actors and audience members alike to make this special! Currently, we are writing original basic outlines and simply developed characters for a murder mystery-themed long-form performance that will also include some favorite improv games throughout. Get ready to think on your feet – you might be following clues, creating clues, be accused of murder... it’s improv, so I guess we’ll just have to see!
What’s the Plan? We have formed an improv troupe that rehearses frequently (up to 1x per week) and have a weekend long performance every few months. Rehearsals and performances would be held at Northern Starz in Ramsey. If you are an improv actor or person with an interest in improv please reach out to Rachel@northernstarz. We have a very experienced improv teacher and manager & writer already lined up, but we’re flexible people! What else could we include? What do you want to bring to the table?
